the eric update - day 7: eric's first movie!

o.k. i'm an imovie novice, but i thought you all might enjoy a sneak peak of a much longer version of movie that i'm working on.

update: i posted this late last night and forgot to warn everyone that i pulled a 'spielberg' and can rightly be accused of blatant pulling on the heartstrings. keeps a tissue handy :-)

the video clip at the end is tiny piece of what the wonderful nicu nurses have shot.

update: many people are asking, and i can't believe i forgot to properly attribute the music clip on the movie. it's track 1 on lullaby: a windham hill collection. the vocal track is not properly credited on the amazon link, but it's quite clearly carly simon's voice. kris had picked up the cd a couple of weeks before the birth and had been playing it at night to help her sleep, so eric heard the song dozens of times in the womb. and while i might not necessarily subscribe the theories that puport to prove that music therapy in the womb will make your baby "smarter" ( kris respectfully disagrees with me on this point ), it's well known that babies can "hear" in the womb at 20 weeks and can differentially respond to sounds that they've heard in the womb after delivery.

You may be a novice Eric, but you made me cry this morning. Very touching. The video that the nurses took is amazing. My thoughts are with you, Kris and Eric IV every day. Love you all.

Dear Eric and Kris, I cried this morning too. Your movie brings us right there with Eric IV to see what a miracle he is - and what a fighter he is - to adapt to his strange new environment. The emotions he has brought forth cannot be described with words. I think you should collect all of your writings, photos and movies for a book on micro-premies. Lots of other future parents who will go through this turmoil of joy, sadness and worry will want and need a resource for information and emotional support. Your daily journal on the saga of your new family is providing all of us - and others - with a treasure that cannot be measured. I'm so proud of all 3 of you and my thoughts and prayers are with you constantly. I remain eternally grateful that Kris and Eric IV are both recovering. I love you all more than I can say. Mom

I have no idea what happened to the comment I posted this morning. Anyway, I was really touched by this. I can't wait to see it finished! And, wow - it is so amazing to finally see him squirming around. He's a "rascal" for sure!

i think blogger's comments get borked more often than people might suspect. i've been getting emails form people on a daily basis saying that they don't seem to be working.

in your case, i did get and email notice that you had left a comment, but it didn't appear on the site ( as you noted ). sigh.

as always, thanks for the support.

[ about ]

this site chronicles the continuing adventures of my son, odin, who was unexpectedly born on the fourth of july at 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound 7 ounces.

he's quite a fighter and you can always send him a postcard to the most current address listed here if you're inspired by his adventures. see the postcard project/google maps mashup to see a map of the postcards.

if you're new, you can browse the archives to catch up. and don't forget to watch a few movies that i made while we were in the neonatal intensive care unit. or if you want the abridged version and you can find a copy, you can read about his adventures in the november 2005 issue of parents magazine.
