the eric update - day 56: the fourth. part five.

woohoo! eric is 8 weeks old, which means it's his second lunar birthday! to celebrate, i thought it was about time time to release the 'the fourth. part five.' ( 'the fourth. part one.' 'the fourth. part two.' 'the fourth. part three.' 'the fourth. part four.' ).

after i released 'part four', i decided that it would make my life easier if i released movies every two weeks, instead of every week, but 'part five' sat in postproduction for two more weeks, for no good reason other than a lack of time and energy to put the finishing touches on it. so, that's a long way of saying the 'part five' covers weeks 5 and 6 and does not include photos from the past two weeks. as you might guess, 'the fourth. part 6.' is being edited down and will bring the series up to the current date.

i ended up going with another tuck and patti song, which i tried to avoid, since i had already chosen them for 'the fourth. part two.' and everybody knows that the rules dictate that you can't use material from the same artists for more than one track when you're doing this sort of thing; but after trying lots of other songs, i just couldn't get their rendition of cyndi lauper's "time after time" out of my head, so i relented and went with it. i think it's just about perfect and hopefully you'll forgive my breaking the rules associated with picking soundtracks.

i didn't get a lot prerelease feedback on the tearability factor, but my guess is that you might want a tissue or two within reach just in case.

Happy 2nd lunar birthday Eric IV! You are getting to be such a big boy. As someone else said he is starting to look like a little baby boy and less like a micro-preemie. Although when we do see pictures of him with hands holding him, we can see how small he still is.

Beautiful video once again. You used one of my favorite songs. Now whenever I hear it, I will think of Eric IV and the love a father has for his son. Thank you for continuing to share your lives with so many. I know it helps me to feel a little more connected across the miles. My love to you all. Monica

Happy birthday to Odin, and what a great song.

I don't want to bring things to a negative place (and I'm really not trying to be an a**hole) but I couldn't watch the whole video because it was really jerky. The fades in were spectacular, but the images don't fade out or cross fade, they just disappear abruptly off the screen. Without being a real jerk, I thought your other videos were much better.

ha! you're not being a jerk. i got waaaaaay to behind in getting the movies out the door and rushed 'part five' a bit. maybe i'll release a "director's cut" with better editing, if i find the time :-) it takes a long time to render the movies on my aging ibook, so until someone buys me a spiffy new laptop, i might be forced to take a shortcut or two given my limited time.

thanks for the comment, i'm interested to know what you think of 'part six'.

monica, i'm glad you liked the video, choppy editing and all :-)

when you said it was your favorite song - did you mean the original or the tuck and patti version? not that it makes a diffference, just wondering.

That was the first time I heard the Tuck and Patti version. I would have a hard time picking which version was my favorite. The words themselves always seem to strike a chord with me. I guess I'll have to listen to them a few more times and then let you know :-)

I can't wait to see Part 6 when I get home (can't watch them at work...). I was always a Cat Stevens fan too. I think I know the words to every Cat Stevens song...I can thank Mom for that one (and I don't mean that in the sarcastic tone that I am usually known for). Monica

[ about ]

this site chronicles the continuing adventures of my son, odin, who was unexpectedly born on the fourth of july at 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound 7 ounces.

he's quite a fighter and you can always send him a postcard to the most current address listed here if you're inspired by his adventures. see the postcard project/google maps mashup to see a map of the postcards.

if you're new, you can browse the archives to catch up. and don't forget to watch a few movies that i made while we were in the neonatal intensive care unit. or if you want the abridged version and you can find a copy, you can read about his adventures in the november 2005 issue of parents magazine.
