the eric update - day 94: waiting patiently. too much rice.

hey, today was pretty boring, in a good way. we just sat around waiting for tommorrow when we'll hopefully have a much better idea as to when eric will get a the "o.k." to go home. he didn't have any alarms and seemed to continue to recover from his recent severe episodes of reflux. i'm not sure we'll get much sleep tonight as we ponder whether he'll be coming home in a day or two or three or six or ten.

i guess it's a good thing that the recent big news is that we've discovered that we've been adding too much rice to his feedings to control his reflux. yesterday we discovered that we were adding twice as much pulverized rice to his milk than he needed which is nice to know since the solid food in his diet is making him a little gassy. hopefully less rice will mean that he'll have less gastrointestinal troubles.

for the record, if your adding pulverized rice to milk you only need 3/4 of teaspoon per 45 cc's of milk. previously we were adding 1.5 teaspoons per 45 cc's which is correct only if you're using rice that isn't pulverized.

you really do learn something new everyday in the nicu.

Keeping my fingers crossed that you get good news tonight about Odin's impending escape (I'm not gonna say the H word!!)
Oh, I mentioned Johnny Slings to you before as a way to help control reflux. I guess they are actually called Tucker Slings. They allow you to put the baby on an extreme angle safely (much safer than elevating a crib) I just wanted to post a link in case it helps anyone reading who has a baby with reflux.

Hope Odin's jail break is happening soon!

Just wanted to let you know that I will be waiting for that call, just after you arrive home, to let me know that the jail break is completed! Nana, Kirk and I are anxiously awaiting along with everyone else. What a big day it will be to celebrate! Eric - you came home from the NICU about the time you were due. I expect that Eric IV will too. Soon, I will post the pictures. I love you all. Love, Mom

"it is hard to be brave," said piglet, sniffing slightly, "when you're only a Very Small Animal." rabbit, who had begun to write very busily, looked up and said: "it is because you are a very small animal that you will be Useful in the adventure before us."

[ about ]

this site chronicles the continuing adventures of my son, odin, who was unexpectedly born on the fourth of july at 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound 7 ounces.

he's quite a fighter and you can always send him a postcard to the most current address listed here if you're inspired by his adventures. see the postcard project/google maps mashup to see a map of the postcards.

if you're new, you can browse the archives to catch up. and don't forget to watch a few movies that i made while we were in the neonatal intensive care unit. or if you want the abridged version and you can find a copy, you can read about his adventures in the november 2005 issue of parents magazine.
