shhhhhh. be be vewy vewy quiet, we're hunting wabbi...er...christmas trees!
today was odin's five month birthday and we decided to celebrate by taking him out to get his first christmas tree!
some micropreemie parents might cringe at the prospect of taking him outdoors for an extended period of time, but it was unseasonably warm and we decided that as long as he seemed warm enough that it'd be fun to have him come along. normally we might spend hours trying to find The Perfect Tree, but this year we promised ourselves we'd get in and get out quick.
hi kirsty -
merry christmas to you too! well, i don't know if it'd be correct to say we have to cut down our own trees, but we think it's a fun little ritual to do for the holidays. it's lots more fun when it's really cold out and there's lots of snow on the ground and you have to ride around in a big, horse-drawn hay wagon with other strangers who are getting their trees "the old fashioned way". but then again, we wouldn't have been able to bring odin along if if were really cold and snowy and we were surrounded by strangers, so this was fun too.
the snowdeal show ® is not really on the air, so you're not missing anything :-) it's just a phrase for the really realest real reality show that i've been threatening to produce for years because so many people seem to think it'd make for great t.v. - even before the micropreemie adventures started.
Hi E3 and family,
Heather from Nova Scotia here. I loved the pictures of getting the trees!! We will be doing the same here soon...just waiting for my daughter to arrive home from Vancouver to help us get the perfect one!
I was so happy to see REAL trees! Mostly that is what people have here but I have noticed a trend that I find a bit disappointing. People are purchasing artificial trees because they want to have the tree up earlier and longer through the season! All I can think is that it's not a REAL tree!!! - it doesn't have the same ambience, warmth...scent....spirit!
Your ideal of the victorian Christmas rings a bit true in these parts. Although I grew up in a massive Dutch colonial with a dining room that glittered with place settings for 24 I now live in a semi modern townhouse style condo in a Victorian end of the city. One of the key points when purchasing my place was that it had a working fireplace. The Christmas tree has a place of honour to the right of the fireplace. Some may be horrified to know that with my partner being Danish we have real candles on our tree. Between the warm glow of the fireplace and the glow of the candles on the tree..combined with family and friends full of warm hearts and hot toddys ...the place wreaks of Christmas spirit..
I love your pictures..your sharing of all your experiences. You are very generous...the true meaning of the holidays...
thank you so much..I look forward to viewing so many more. Odin is a very, very fortunate young man!

“"it is hard to be brave," said piglet, sniffing slightly, "when you're only a Very Small Animal." rabbit, who had begun to write very busily, looked up and said: "it is because you are a very small animal that you will be Useful in the adventure before us."”
the complete tales & poems of winnie the poohthis site chronicles the continuing adventures of my son, odin, who was unexpectedly born on the fourth of july at 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound 7 ounces.
he's quite a fighter and you can always send him a postcard to the most current address listed here if you're inspired by his adventures. see the postcard project/google maps mashup to see a map of the postcards.
if you're new, you can browse the archives to catch up. and don't forget to watch a few movies that i made while we were in the neonatal intensive care unit. or if you want the abridged version and you can find a copy, you can read about his adventures in the november 2005 issue of parents magazine.
