the postcard project: somerville, massachusetts.

unfortunately emily from over at "the angus index" doesn't tell us exactly from where in the commonwealth of massachusettes she sends greetings, but that's o.k. because anybody who quotes such an extraordinarily appropriate passage from yeats is alright by me:

happiness is neither virtue nor pleasure, nor this thing nor that but simply growth. we are happy when we are growing."
update: emily confesses that the postcard was sent from somerville, massachusetts, which is self described as "Tree City USA".

WooHOO, my postcard made it into the slideshow! :D So glad you enjoyed it -- I'm amazed and amused each workday by your diligent, fatherly postings. Long live the Snowdeal Saga! Minus the medical emergencies (both infant and canine) and, uh, windows falling out, that sort of thing. FYI, when I mailed that card I lived in Somerville, MA (Boston's lo-rent hipster paradise) and now I live in Watertown, MA (home of the Armenian Museum of America).

Cheers -- Emily :)

ps -- FANTASTIC gift to the NICU, very thoughtful and so much more useful than stuffed animals, etc. It made me think of that movie "Calendar Girls" (a chick flick, but...), based on the true story of a woman whose husband died of cancer, and she and her ladies' group raised money with those tastefully nude calendars to buy a fancy leather sofa for the family waiting room in the cancer ward...because while she waited there they had only hard plastic chairs. Of course, the calendars were so successful they eventually donated enough for a whole new hospital wing! Anyway, it's the thought that counts, and I think your family has spun the karma wheel very well! :)

"...based on the true story of a woman whose husband died of cancer, and she and her ladies' group raised money with those tastefully nude calendars to buy a fancy leather sofa for the family waiting room in the cancer ward..."ha! i heard of that movie, but i didn't know they were raising the money for a comfotable sofa. it's even funnier when you think that kris and i really wanted to donate a comfortable padded recliner for nursing moms and kangaroo care. the ones they have get pretty uncomfortable after a half an hour. but, we didn't have the money for comfortable chairs and i hadn't thought about the nide calendar money raising angle :-)

"it is hard to be brave," said piglet, sniffing slightly, "when you're only a Very Small Animal." rabbit, who had begun to write very busily, looked up and said: "it is because you are a very small animal that you will be Useful in the adventure before us."

[ about ]

this site chronicles the continuing adventures of my son, odin, who was unexpectedly born on the fourth of july at 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound 7 ounces.

he's quite a fighter and you can always send him a postcard to the most current address listed here if you're inspired by his adventures. see the postcard project/google maps mashup to see a map of the postcards.

if you're new, you can browse the archives to catch up. and don't forget to watch a few movies that i made while we were in the neonatal intensive care unit. or if you want the abridged version and you can find a copy, you can read about his adventures in the november 2005 issue of parents magazine.
