the eric update - day 190: reaching for the red block.

odin is having more fun working out in him gym. it's fascinating to watch become even more and more engaged with his surroundings. in this picture a big red cube has captured his attention while he's lounging on his boppy.

it's almost impossible to enjoy these moments while simultaneously remaining pensive about developmental delays that might be related to odin's microprematurity. recently a nurse cautioned us to be very aware that odin will quite likely have some degree of motor and speech delays that will probably need to be addressed by professionals. it's certainly a little early to really start "worrying" about such things, but i've noticed recently that i've found myself wondering when and if we will.

but for now, it's fun to sit back and enjoy the simple pleasure of watching him play with a block while working out.

I tuned into the Snowdeal show when I came across a random link about Odin going home. Of course, I rewound to see what I'd missed. And now I think I'm a little bit in love with a kid I don't even know. I can't begin to fathom the sort of worry you've had to endure over the last 6+ months. Worry seems like an inadequate word. So to also worry about what the future holds in store is inevitable, but we're all cheering little Odin on from out here in cyberspace. I check in on him everyday...and truly marvel at how far he's come.

Anyway, all the best. I have a hunch this little guy is going to continue to amaze.

thanks for the wonderful comment elizabeth! i'm glad you stumbled on the snowdeal show :-) of course, although there's been a lot of worrying, we're doing quite well and feel very fortunate that he's proved himself to be quite a fighter. it's almost impossible to imagine what the next six months will bring.

"it is hard to be brave," said piglet, sniffing slightly, "when you're only a Very Small Animal." rabbit, who had begun to write very busily, looked up and said: "it is because you are a very small animal that you will be Useful in the adventure before us."

[ about ]

this site chronicles the continuing adventures of my son, odin, who was unexpectedly born on the fourth of july at 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound 7 ounces.

he's quite a fighter and you can always send him a postcard to the most current address listed here if you're inspired by his adventures. see the postcard project/google maps mashup to see a map of the postcards.

if you're new, you can browse the archives to catch up. and don't forget to watch a few movies that i made while we were in the neonatal intensive care unit. or if you want the abridged version and you can find a copy, you can read about his adventures in the november 2005 issue of parents magazine.
