the eric update - day 244: sleep aid or sleeplessness inducer?

in our tireless ( ha! pun intended ) attempts to find ways to help odin sleep a bit better we bought one of these devices that attaches to the side of the crib that plays music and has little characters that move around with complete with a "soothing" light show that's projected on the ceiling ( it's made by fisher price and is similar in concept to the Ocean Wonders Aquarium - but i can't find any links to this specific product online ).

i was skeptical that the contraption would help put odin to sleep what with all the lights and motion and whatnot, but it actually seems to work. he does indeed fall asleep faster with almost no fussing.

my only nit is that there isn't a way to remotely control the unit and it's hardwired to turn off after 8 minutes. it'd be nice if you could set it to run for longer periods of time as needed.

odin is doing much, much better falling asleep by himself without mamma around, which is fantastic.

but once asleep he still tends to wake up every couple of hours to nurse and we're still looking for non-traumatizing strategies to get him to sleep a little longer through the night.

The Ocean Wonders one is better IMO, we had the light show one too and sold it once we got the Ocean Wonders - the music is much more hypnotic and goes for 10 minutes - you can choose to have it light up or not. Unfortunately a toddler can crank it up to full blast and it is super duper loud, and he can also turn it on super duper loud suddenly in the middle of the night, rockin out the whole house :-/

"I suppose you've already read the No-Cry Sleep Solution..." |

oh yes. we're big fans of the the No-Cry sleep solution and have tried to follow most of the advice in the book. odin's already doing a lot better even since i wrote this post, so maybe it's just a phase ( he says, knocking on wood ).

"it is hard to be brave," said piglet, sniffing slightly, "when you're only a Very Small Animal." rabbit, who had begun to write very busily, looked up and said: "it is because you are a very small animal that you will be Useful in the adventure before us."

[ about ]

this site chronicles the continuing adventures of my son, odin, who was unexpectedly born on the fourth of july at 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound 7 ounces.

he's quite a fighter and you can always send him a postcard to the most current address listed here if you're inspired by his adventures. see the postcard project/google maps mashup to see a map of the postcards.

if you're new, you can browse the archives to catch up. and don't forget to watch a few movies that i made while we were in the neonatal intensive care unit. or if you want the abridged version and you can find a copy, you can read about his adventures in the november 2005 issue of parents magazine.
