the eric update - day 309: so, ahhh, what was in those teething pills anyways?

i don't want to turn this into all-teething-all-the-time, which of course means that i'm going to write about our continuing adventures with teething.

in my naivety, i thought that when teeth finally broke broke through the gums that we'd see the rapid disappearance of teething symptoms. yes, i can hear all you veteran parents quietly snickering from the peanut gallery. indeed that doesn't seem to be the case, so we ran drove to our local health food store to grab some hyland teething tablets which a few people recently recommended as a teething remedy ( not that we won't be trying the other ideas, this was just the first on our list for a variety of uninteresting reasons ).

i think the jury is still out on whether or not the tablets are going to work for us. we've given him two doses of three tablets about four hours apart and it's hard to say if it helped alleviate his symptoms. then again, maybe he'd be a lot more symptomatic if we had done nothing. then again, sometimes a placebo really does work wonders so maybe it's just a case of trial and error until you find something that works until it doesn't and you move on erroneously attributing the whims of statistics with cause and effect.

sometimes i think my life would be a little easier if i had taken fewer math classes. but i digress.

in any case, after we had given odin his first dose of teething tablets i decided to check the ingredients:

Active Ingredients: Calcarea Phosphorica (calcium phosphate) 3x, Chamomilla (chamomile) 3x HPUS, Coffea Cruda (coffee) 3x HPUS, Belladonna 3X HPUS 0.0003% Alkaloids

belladonna? i guess if it's the hallucinogenic nightshade that might explain odin's behavior after taking a few of the tabs!

in all seriousness, if you do decide to try the teething tablets, make sure you follow directions and dissolve them under the patient's tongue! if you just put them on top of the tongue, they're likely to gag as they try to swallow the tablet before it completely dissolves. trust me on this ;-(

for the humor impaired, i feel compelled to add that his appearence in the photo was not indicative of his general demeaner - it just happened to be one of the many "unflattering" photos that i would usually delete. and i'm mostly joking about the beladonna. mostly.

Ah, but most of the medications we take (even the vitamins) are also considered to be poisons. Everything is poisonous given the right dose, even water.

Wanna borrow some of my kid wrapping bubble wrap? I'm only kinda kidding here. If he'd keep it on, I'd be tempted to do it...

Tylonal, Motrin - nothing works... It's just life's way of torturing our children, and then torturing us in return.

oooookkkaaaaaaaay, nitpicker :-) actually, i wholeheartedly agree - a chemistry teacher of mine had a bumper sticker that i've always remembered that stated, "what in the world isn't chemistry?" nothing! more than anything i was amused that after saying that i wouldn't be giving odin any brandy because of it's known toxicity in infants that that i'd be giving him a tablet with an ingredient that's known to be a hallucinogen and a toxin. and the really amusing point is that it's a little hard to say, "but it's in such a small dose that it can't possibly be harmful!" because that's exactly what the proponents of alcohol as a teething remedy believe, even though the medical establishment advises otherwise. who knows maybe in 3 years belladonna will be one of those thinks that are grandkids will be shocked, shocked(!) to hear that we gave their parents.

i think this is the slippery slope of neuroticism that one starts to slide down as a parent :-)

ha! we're beginning to feel like that with teething remedies as we read with envy how people had luck with this or that :-)

Well....ah, er. Crap, ya got me :-)

Oh well, life is really just a process of picking your poisons, isn't it?

oof. in my previous comment, i meant to write:

"who knows maybe in 30 years belladonna will be one of those things that our grandkids will be shocked, shocked(!) to hear that we gave their parents."

not enough coffee, i suppose!

aha! another victim felled by my mad debating skillz! just kidding. hopefully it's apparent to everyone that i'm gently making fun of myself/ourselves for not really having idea what we're doing and making it up the best we can as we go along :-)

Not only apparent, but much more entertaining and amusing than I could have put it :-).

"it is hard to be brave," said piglet, sniffing slightly, "when you're only a Very Small Animal." rabbit, who had begun to write very busily, looked up and said: "it is because you are a very small animal that you will be Useful in the adventure before us."

this site chronicles the continuing adventures of my son, odin, who was unexpectedly born on the fourth of july at 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound 7 ounces.

he's quite a fighter and you can always send him a postcard to the most current address listed here if you're inspired by his adventures. see the postcard project/google maps mashup to see a map of the postcards.

if you're new, you can browse the archives to catch up. and don't forget to watch a few movies that i made while we were in the neonatal intensive care unit. or if you want the abridged version and you can find a copy, you can read about his adventures in the november 2005 issue of parents magazine.
