the eric update - day 325: happy birthday to me! and the bestest birthday present, EVAH!

yes, sirree. today just happened to be my birthday. amidst the gifts and great food, it's hard to not think about just how much my life has changed in ways that i could not possibly have imagined a year ago. that's life, i suppose - learning how to make the most of the unexpected curve balls that it loves to throw at you.

of course, odin is oblivious that he's celebrating my thirty third birthday, and it would appear that his pudgy baby belly is far more interesting to him than my rapidly advancing age!

he's getting very attuned to his body and lately has quite a fun time pushing and pulling and tugging at whatever might be at hand :-)

i'm not making this up - he did surprise us by giving me the bestest birthday present a father could ask for.

today he said, "dada" for the very first time ( much to mamma's chagrin )!

Dada came first for both my kids, too. I think it's easier to say. The good news, is you'll get MAMA in a week or two (especially if you say it to them a few hundred times a day for the next few days!)

Happy birthday (And you didn't get a car, did you? The stick shift photo?)

naaaaaww, that can't be it :-)

if you click on each picture you can see a little description. yes, we did get a new car that happened to correspond with my birthday, but wasn't a birthday present per se. it's a brand new jetta tdi sedan. we traded in our jetta tdi wagon for the sedan since the new one's are bigger and have a few more niceties.

Happy Birthday! And congrats on the Dada. I decided to thrill whenever my kid said anything... whether it be my name or not. It's all pretty cool.

I'm thinking of getting that same PowerShot. But I'm wondering what your (brief) experience with the battery life has been - I find the AA batteries a turnoff, since they seem to need replacing so frequently. I don't like the idea of lugging extras with me when I'm out and about. What do you think?

my brief experience has been less than stellar, as the alkaline batteries that came with camera went dead after about 30 shots. although apparently NiMH batteries will perform better than alkaline - worrying about battery drain is new to me as i've never had that problem with my d70.

Happy Birthday!!! And congrats about Odin saying dada. It's a special feeling isn't it?

Happy Birthday! The real celebration is in 4 months, when you hit thirty-three and a third years old.

The photo of Odin looking at his tummy as if it's a brand new thing that just appeared (not far off, actually) -- for a second, the shadows made me think of a computerey dancing baby in a music video. Can't remember the song name for the life of me, doubtless will when I hit "publish".

"it is hard to be brave," said piglet, sniffing slightly, "when you're only a Very Small Animal." rabbit, who had begun to write very busily, looked up and said: "it is because you are a very small animal that you will be Useful in the adventure before us."

[ about ]

this site chronicles the continuing adventures of my son, odin, who was unexpectedly born on the fourth of july at 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound 7 ounces.

he's quite a fighter and you can always send him a postcard to the most current address listed here if you're inspired by his adventures. see the postcard project/google maps mashup to see a map of the postcards.

if you're new, you can browse the archives to catch up. and don't forget to watch a few movies that i made while we were in the neonatal intensive care unit. or if you want the abridged version and you can find a copy, you can read about his adventures in the november 2005 issue of parents magazine.
