the eric update - day 363: blasted fog! or the day we didn't see the lobster boat races.

ever since we made our trip out east i've been patiently waiting for the start of the lobster boat racing season. certainly there are few ways to pass your time that are more enjoyable than watching boats originally designed for catching lobsters racing through a harbor with 1000+ horsepower engines!

and we couldn't think of a better place to watch a race than birthplace of lobsterboat racing - jonesport, maine. the sport has spread along the entire coast and, somewhat controversially lured competitors who aren't even real fisher(wo)men, but jonesport is where it all began, more than 50 years ago and it's not unlikely that a few of odin's relatives in the area were some of first competitors.

but alas, nature had other plans as the blasted fog refused to lift delaying the start of the races.

we lingered on the bridge that connects jonesport to beals island for over two hours chatting with the locals, patiently waiting for conditions to get better; but anyone who has ever had an infant knows that naptime and mealtime will eventually arrive and even though odin was the model spectator the entire time, we eventually decided that the fog was never going to lift and they were going to have to reschedule the race for another day.

15 minutes after we left, we heard on the radio that the wind had suddenly shifted and the races had started. sigh.

"it is hard to be brave," said piglet, sniffing slightly, "when you're only a Very Small Animal." rabbit, who had begun to write very busily, looked up and said: "it is because you are a very small animal that you will be Useful in the adventure before us."

[ about ]

this site chronicles the continuing adventures of my son, odin, who was unexpectedly born on the fourth of july at 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound 7 ounces.

he's quite a fighter and you can always send him a postcard to the most current address listed here if you're inspired by his adventures. see the postcard project/google maps mashup to see a map of the postcards.

if you're new, you can browse the archives to catch up. and don't forget to watch a few movies that i made while we were in the neonatal intensive care unit. or if you want the abridged version and you can find a copy, you can read about his adventures in the november 2005 issue of parents magazine.
