ex machina

the eric update - day 397: the day ( and night ) where we find out if odin will actually sleep in a crib.

for quite some time odin has eschewed the confines of a crib in favor of his Big Boy Bed which allows him to crawl around his room to satisfy his urge to explore before bedtime.

but while the setup has worked extraordinarily well at home, it's hard to replicate when we travel as it's not very common to find accomodations with a single mattress on the floor without a box spring or bed frame; so when we visited grandpa and grandma snowdeal for a weekend wedding that required an overnight stay we thought it might be "fun" to test out whether or not odin would even fall asleep in a crib.

i bet kris that he'd much prefer using the sides of the crib to stand and growl for hours before letting us know that he really didn't appreciate us restricting his ability to roam the room at his leisure.

certainly it seemed that during our extensive testing prior to bed time, odin didn't give me much evidence to doubt my hunch, as he obviously enjoyed the fact that the crib rail was the perfect height for standing which is one of his very funnest things to do.

so we pleasantly surprised to discover that odin fell fast asleep near his normal bedtime without The Four Bees in a strange house in a strangely small bed with bars.

resilient, that boy is. at least until 2 a.m. when he decided that he wasn't :-)

"it is hard to be brave," said piglet, sniffing slightly, "when you're only a Very Small Animal." rabbit, who had begun to write very busily, looked up and said: "it is because you are a very small animal that you will be Useful in the adventure before us."

[ about ]

this site chronicles the continuing adventures of my son, odin, who was unexpectedly born on the fourth of july at 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound 7 ounces.

he's quite a fighter and you can always send him a postcard to the most current address listed here if you're inspired by his adventures. see the postcard project/google maps mashup to see a map of the postcards.

if you're new, you can browse the archives to catch up. and don't forget to watch a few movies that i made while we were in the neonatal intensive care unit. or if you want the abridged version and you can find a copy, you can read about his adventures in the november 2005 issue of parents magazine.
