ex machina

holy crap. has the long rumored site redesign finally arrived?

i'm toying with a new site design that's been sitting on my computer for, well, a loooooong time. if anything appears broken you might want to try to force your browser to reload the page.

or maybe something really is broken since i've only tested the design on an ibook with firefox and safari. i mean, does anyone really use windows and internet explorer anymore :-)

more seriously, it was about time to more more accurately reflect the fact that ex machina has become a space to chronicle odin's adventures and i tried to make it a little more hospitable for all the new visitors who find the site by googling for information on prematurity and can't figure out how to access the archives. i'm not sure i've made things better or worse with the "about" blurb in the sidebar, so suggestions on wordsmithing and content/structure changes are welcome.

Since I'm on an iBook with Firefox, it works. The ads are in several spots, I see... wondering if you can pick just 1 or 2?

Yes, well. My workplace has not yet seen the wisdom of getting Macs for everyone.

So, at home (on my Mac) everything looks great. At work, the right sidebar appears *below* the left column with the entries.

i've been "experimenting" with adsense for awhile and haven't added any new ads. they're mostly for the "benefit" of people who arrive via search which is why the front page is relatively free of ads as is the rss feed ( i.e. most regular readers visiting the front page or reading the feed don't see the ads ). if you haven't noticed them before i'm assuming you're reading via a news aggregator?

meh. i guess that's what the first commenter meant by it doesn't work? also can't remember if explorer deals with png transparency correctly for the logo graphics. so you see the header color around the logo graphics or is it gray? i suppose i should just dig up a windows machine somewhere :-)

it looks great on a mac with opera :-)

/me mumbling to myself, i think i fixed the png transparency issue with the logo on windows/explorer using a bit of css and a smidge of javascript. now to fix that column....

Yeah, I've been RSSing it for a while, and of course, there's Flickr.

I know the ads have their place. I think I'd just be inclined to ditch the ones right below your posts.

i think you might be right. i'm still collecting data on which placements work best. or whether they are worth it at all.

[ about ]

this site chronicles the continuing adventures of my son, odin, who was unexpectedly born on the fourth of july at 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound 7 ounces.

he's quite a fighter and you can always send him a postcard to the most current address listed here if you're inspired by his adventures. see the postcard project/google maps mashup to see a map of the postcards.

if you're new, you can browse the archives to catch up. and don't forget to watch a few movies that i made while we were in the neonatal intensive care unit. or if you want the abridged version and you can find a copy, you can read about his adventures in the november 2005 issue of parents magazine.
