ex machina

brrrrrrrrrrrrr!

perhaps you live in a warmer clime and were wondering if it's possible to walk 4 miles ( 6.4 km ) when the actual temperature is -10 degrees F ( -23 degrees C ) and the wind chill makes it seem like it's -20 F ( -23 C ).

if you're properly attired, it is possible to survive even though exposed skin will freeze in 30 minutes, which is about 30 minutes shorter than the time it takes to walk 4 miles. aside from the usual precautions such long johns, two pairs of socks, two gloves, two hats and a hooded sweatshirt - i've found a scarf to be indespensible in preventing your skin from freezing.

it does take some skill to wrap the scarf tighly enough to prevent cold air from entering while leaving just enough space near your eyes to allow your warm breath to vent out near your eyes which will hopefully keep them warm enough to prevent frostbite; if you look closely you'll see that after an hour the vapor from my breath was beginning to freeze on my eyelashes.

i could have possibly made it 5 miles but i decided not to push my luck :-)

"it is hard to be brave," said piglet, sniffing slightly, "when you're only a Very Small Animal." rabbit, who had begun to write very busily, looked up and said: "it is because you are a very small animal that you will be Useful in the adventure before us."

[ about ]

this site chronicles the continuing adventures of my son, odin, who was unexpectedly born on the fourth of july at 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound 7 ounces.

he's quite a fighter and you can always send him a postcard to the most current address listed here if you're inspired by his adventures. see the postcard project/google maps mashup to see a map of the postcards.

if you're new, you can browse the archives to catch up. and don't forget to watch a few movies that i made while we were in the neonatal intensive care unit. or if you want the abridged version and you can find a copy, you can read about his adventures in the november 2005 issue of parents magazine.
