ex machina

the eric update - day 1483: suddenly into swimming. without mamma or poppi.

odin has always enjoyed running around in knee or ankle deep water, but has never really liked taking a dip in water above his waist unless he was being held by an adult.

in preparation for his upcoming swimming lessons where he'll have to learn to get in water without his mamma and poppi, we've been talking with him about trying to muster the courage to take the plunge.

at first he was pretty skeptical that it was something that he'd like to do, but after a few days he agreed that it might be fun now that he was getting to be such a big boy.

so, after sitting on the edge of grandmas pool, watching his bigger cousins play in the water he said he thought he might be ready. that he might be brave enough.

of course, after just a few hours of practicing, he was doing the doggie paddle and floating on his back and swimming from one side of the pool to the other.

all without any help from his proud, if slightly sad, parents ;-(

Onward/Upward seems to be Odin's motto! Bravo.

"it is hard to be brave," said piglet, sniffing slightly, "when you're only a Very Small Animal." rabbit, who had begun to write very busily, looked up and said: "it is because you are a very small animal that you will be Useful in the adventure before us."

[ about ]

this site chronicles the continuing adventures of my son, odin, who was unexpectedly born on the fourth of july at 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound 7 ounces.

he's quite a fighter and you can always send him a postcard to the most current address listed here if you're inspired by his adventures. see the postcard project/google maps mashup to see a map of the postcards.

if you're new, you can browse the archives to catch up. and don't forget to watch a few movies that i made while we were in the neonatal intensive care unit. or if you want the abridged version and you can find a copy, you can read about his adventures in the november 2005 issue of parents magazine.
