the eric update - day 1926: saying goodbye ( finally ) to truck the cat.

about 3 years ago we brought a wonderful new kitty into our lives that odin would soon name truck because of course why wouldn't you name your new kitty after one of your most favorite things.

she was a great cat, who made no bones, ahem, about loving smoked trout, enjoyed following odin around on his Grand Adventures Measuring Things and mostly put up with him lugging her about here and there.

around last thanksgiving she got very sick, very quickly and stopped eating. we took her to the vet to see what was wrong and she suddenly, and very unexpectedly, died. the vet theorized that she was unintentionally or intentionally poisoned, since she was in otherwise tip-top shape.

we were, of course, quite sad and odin wanted to give her a proper burial even though the ground was frozen. so we wrapped her up and put her in the freezer, waiting for the ground to thaw. eventually the ground did thaw, but she then became a testament to our powers of procrastination, so much so that odin would tell folks about his dead cat who lived in the freezer.

so, today, as the cold weather threatens to again freeze the ground, we decided that we best finally give truck a proper burial. prayers were spoken as we laid her in her final resting place and odin decided he wanted to give her one last pet.

we buried truck the cat under a transplanted "blueberry muffin" vibernum so odin could always look at the bush and think of truck helping it to grow big and strong. he thought it would be nice to place a rock under the bush to help him remember her. "to truckee," ( her nickname ) he wrote. "xoxoxoxoxoxo".

"it is hard to be brave," said piglet, sniffing slightly, "when you're only a Very Small Animal." rabbit, who had begun to write very busily, looked up and said: "it is because you are a very small animal that you will be Useful in the adventure before us."

[ about ]

this site chronicles the continuing adventures of my son, odin, who was unexpectedly born on the fourth of july at 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound 7 ounces.

he's quite a fighter and you can always send him a postcard to the most current address listed here if you're inspired by his adventures. see the postcard project/google maps mashup to see a map of the postcards.

if you're new, you can browse the archives to catch up. and don't forget to watch a few movies that i made while we were in the neonatal intensive care unit. or if you want the abridged version and you can find a copy, you can read about his adventures in the november 2005 issue of parents magazine.
